Dad and I loved to talk to each other about work.
He didn't fully understand what I do but he loved when I told him about it. He wanted to know when I was traveling, when I was eligible for a raise or a promotion, when I got kudos for being a hard worker. And if I went too far down a rabbit hole, he'd say something like, "Alright…well, I'm glad you're happy."
Dad also loved to talk about his wor. He was proud of the business he built with Video Trading Company, and disappointed when none of us wanted to take it over—but he understood. His passion wasn't ours.
Dad liked the hustle of his work. He liked buying things cheap and selling them fairly priced. He was very generous and often gave people the benefit of the doubt. But boy, you did not want to double cross him. It happened more often than it should, mostly because he was generous and people are assholes. Dad had a good heart, and he really took it personally when people did him wrong. It took a lot for him to get over it because he would give someone the shirt off his back.
