Adam and I went to New York City in February 2020. Dad was excited for me to experience the city. Mostly, he was excited for me to try a "real New York bagel." He said what made them taste so good was the New York water.
I called him when I got there, and I spoke to him most days of the trip. He was thrilled that there was a bagel place on my block. It was called Bagel Talk. I walked there one morning and got an onion bagel, toasted with cream cheese and a thick slice of tomato. It was heaven in a wrap. I called him immediately to tell him how amazing it was. He was thrilled.
On my last day in NYC, I went back to Bagel Talk to get one more onion bagel. They had fresh black and white cookies on the counter. I grabbed two (only $5 for both!) and carried them home to him in my carry-on the next day.
It's comforting to know that I was able to bring him a little bit of joy, all the way from NYC, from a real bagel shop, in his final months.
