Dad said to me in passing one day that he couldn't believe ZZ Top was going to play a concert at Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tennessee.
When tickets went on sale, I bought two for us.
He wasn't feeling well the day of the show but his eyes lit up as he got in my car. We drove to Greeneville and tried to eat dinner at Fatz Café. They were on a wait and we were impatient, so we went down the road to his favorite place: Ryan's. It was a crappy dinner but the company was great. We were excited to see a show together. We stuffed ourselves with weird shrimp and chocolate pudding, then we loaded up and drove to NPAC.
The place was packed, so we had to park kind of far away, up on a hill. He shuffled the whole way down the hill, already dreading the walk back up.
We had decent seats with a great view of the stage (while everyone was seated). As soon as ZZ Top came out, everyone stood up and clapped. Dad and I joined them for a moment, then he needed to sit back down. The women in front of us danced the whole show, and I worried that it would ruin his time. But he got the occasional view of the stage and he loved watching everyone dance and sing. He smiled the whole time.
He tapped his feet. He patted my back and laughed. He did his dad dance (two fingers, pointing). I am so glad we went together.
When they played La Grange, he told me he loved that song.
